An OPD appointment and OPD registration are connected, but they are not identical. The appointment identifies a planned consultation route. Registration connects the patient to the hospital record and the steps required for the visit. The exact hospital-side process can differ by patient status, centre or department.
Start by deciding whether the patient is new, already has a UHID or is returning for follow-up. Then read the relevant appointment and visit instructions before travelling.
What OPD registration means
For this guide, registration means the administrative process used to establish or continue the patient's hospital record for OPD care. It may involve information already supplied during an official online appointment, an existing UHID, a hospital counter step or a department-specific instruction.
Registration does not guarantee consultation, determine medical priority or replace a department's clinical/referral rules.
New patient route
A new patient should first understand the appointment route and preserve the confirmation created by the official service. ORS currently describes a new-patient process using a registered mobile number or ABHA, followed by hospital and department selection, patient details, OTP verification and appointment-slip generation.
Before the visit:
- Check that AIIMS New Delhi and the intended department appear correctly on the official confirmation.
- Save the appointment slip or acknowledgement.
- Read any instructions displayed with the confirmation.
- Check whether the named centre or department has additional requirements.
- Use the first-visit checklist to prepare for the remaining hospital-side steps.
Do not assume that every patient must follow the same physical-counter route. AIIMS departments can publish narrower instructions that apply only to their own service.
Existing patient route
If the patient already has an AIIMS UHID or hospital record, keep it available and avoid creating an unnecessary duplicate patient identity. The official follow-up service provides a separate UHID-based route for participating hospitals.
An existing patient should:
- begin with the earlier UHID or OPD record;
- check the return or appointment instruction already issued;
- use the applicable existing/follow-up route instead of automatically selecting a new-patient path;
- keep earlier relevant hospital records available for continuity;
- confirm any department-specific instruction before visiting.
If the existing record cannot be used online, do not post the UHID publicly or send it to an unofficial helper. Use the verified official service or the purpose-specific AIIMS contact route.
Follow-up registration
Follow-up is not simply another name for a new appointment. A follow-up patient has already been seen and has been asked to return. The department's instruction, earlier record and UHID may determine the correct next step.
Use the official follow-up pathway where it applies. If a department supplied a date, referral direction or counter instruction, treat that as narrower guidance for that service and confirm it through the department or official hospital channel when necessary.
Appointment confirmation versus hospital registration
An appointment slip shows that the official service recorded the appointment transaction. It does not mean that every on-site administrative step has already been completed.
Before travelling, make sure you understand:
- where the relevant centre or department expects the patient to report;
- whether the patient is being treated as new, existing or follow-up;
- which earlier hospital record must be preserved;
- whether the department published a referral or screening condition;
- what the official confirmation says to carry or do next.
The core guide does not publish a universal counter number, registration time or document list because the available official evidence does not support one rule for every AIIMS New Delhi service.
Department-specific exceptions
AIIMS New Delhi department pages demonstrate why institution-wide generalisation is unsafe. For example, GI Surgery publishes its own referral and offline registration-counter information for that service. Those details do not establish a hospital-wide referral rule or hospital-wide counter schedule.
When a department-specific page conflicts with a general article, use the narrower current official instruction for that department. If the instruction is old or unclear, confirm it before travel rather than turning it into a universal rule.
What to keep ready
- Official appointment confirmation when an appointment was made
- Existing UHID or earlier OPD record when the patient is already registered
- Follow-up or referral instruction supplied by the hospital or department
- Only the identity or supporting documents named in the applicable official instruction
- A way to preserve any acknowledgement generated during the process
This website does not collect or verify any of these items.
Common registration mistakes
Starting as a new patient despite an existing record
This can fragment the patient journey. Check the UHID/follow-up route first.
Treating ABHA and UHID as the same identifier
They serve different roles. ABHA is a national digital health identity; UHID is the hospital patient identifier used in the relevant institution workflow.
Assuming one department's rule applies everywhere
Referral, counter and timing details can be service-specific.
Believing online booking completes the full visit
The patient may still need to follow arrival, registration or department instructions at the hospital.
Next steps
New patients should continue with the online appointment guide and first-visit guide. Existing and follow-up patients should read the UHID guide before beginning another registration route.
The relevant official ORS destination is presented on the appointment and UHID pages after their complete explanations.
What happens at the hospital
The exact counters vary by building, but a visit normally has three checkpoints: reaching the correct registration area, completing any required hospital-side verification, and waiting for consultation. An online appointment is useful evidence of the booked visit; it is not proof that every hospital-side step is complete.
Arrive with enough time to locate the building and correct queue. Read the department name on the appointment or referral rather than following a crowd. AIIMS New Delhi uses multiple centres and blocks, and two clinics with related names may not share a registration desk.
After registration, check any token, room, floor or queue instruction before leaving the counter area.
Registration, appointment and consultation are different
| Stage | What it does | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Appointment | Records a date or clinic through the applicable route | That hospital-side registration is complete |
| Registration | Creates or updates the visit record and may issue a card, slip or token | That consultation will begin immediately |
| Consultation | The clinical visit with the relevant service | That every test or future appointment is included |
This distinction explains why a patient can have an appointment message and still need to report to a registration area, or have an OPD card but still need a separate follow-up booking.
If you arrive late
Do not assume that consultation end time is also registration closing time. Registration can close earlier, and some services may stop accepting patients when capacity is exhausted. Check the official department instruction before travelling. If delayed, go to the correct registration or help point and ask what remains possible that day; an independent guide cannot promise acceptance after closing.
Registration checklist by patient type
First-time patient
- Confirm the hospital and department before booking.
- Keep the registered mobile available for OTP and updates.
- Save the final appointment confirmation, not only the first portal screen.
- Carry the identity and referral documents relevant to the selected clinic.
Previous patient
- Keep the earlier AIIMS New Delhi UHID and OPD card.
- Use the existing-patient route where the official service provides one.
- Compare the department on the new booking with the earlier instruction.
- Avoid creating a duplicate hospital identity merely to obtain a new slot.
Follow-up patient
- Read the clinician's return instruction before choosing a route.
- Carry the earlier note, requested reports and current confirmation.
- Confirm whether the follow-up is in the same building and session.
- Treat a written follow-up date and an online slot as separate pieces of evidence when both exist.
After registration
Before joining a waiting area, verify the patient name, UHID where applicable, clinic, date and token or room details on the issued slip. Ask the official desk about unclear handwriting or conflicting locations while you are still nearby. Keep the document for later tests, pharmacy instructions or follow-up; it can be part of the continuity of the visit.
